Good morning, and thanks for spending part of your day with Extra Points.
Before we get into today's Going For Two, I'd like to tell you about another audio project I'll be working on for the next few weeks. As part of a partnership with Athletic Director U, I will be hosting a podcast for the next six weeks with experts over at Navigate. Each week, I'll chat with Navigate's team about how their statistical projections for the final College Football Playoff field, and how various results on the field impact the data. We recorded this first episode before the official College Football Playoff rankings, and Navigate was more bullish on Cincinnati than the early rankings were...but things can change.
Another cool thing about this podcast is that it won't just be a Playoff rankings show. I'm also talking to ADs and other experts. This episode includes a conversation with UTSA AD Lisa Campos, where we talk about what such rapid and immediate football success does for an athletic department, why Lisa thinks UTSA could be the next UCF, and more.
Be sure to check out Athletic Director U for additional podcast content. It's completely free!
Last week's Going For Two on Search Firms was really well received, which got us thinking...what are other parts of college sports sausage making we could shine a new light on?
For this week, we're excited to chat with Jason Belzer. In addition to his work has founder of Student Athlete NIL, Jason is also an active agent in the college sports world.
In this episode, we dig into the following questions:
- Who actually uses agents in the college sports world, and who else needs them?
- The shocking truth about what it required in order to be a college sports agent
- Why buyouts keep skyrocketing, why nobody really loves this system, and how it might be addressed in the future
- What he would change about the hiring process
- What exactly do agents do besides negotiate contracts?
- How do coaches get agents?
- How could agents be a successful part of the equation in improving diversity among college head coaches.
- Why there are so many dang conflicts of interest, and how it could be addressed.
- And much, much more… This was a really informative and interesting podcast, and I think you'll enjoy listening to it.
If you enjoy the show, liking, subscribing, and sharing with your friends is very much appreciated.
Quick business note before I get into the ads.
I have about 15 copies available of my college football What If book that I'm happy to sign and send out. I'll give a free signed copy to anybody who upgrades to the super deluxe paid membership tier this month. I will also sell a limited run of signed copies. These go for $18 (that includes shipping). If you'd like a signed copy, please email me or Twitter DM with your address. If these go quickly, I might be able to get in another run before the holidays, but these days, you never know.
I will ship copies out on Thursday.
Speaking of merch, I am juuuust about out of my current stock of Extra Points stickers. I am planning on re-ordering more, but I thought it might be fun to be able to offer other designs. If you have any idea for what you'd like to see on future stickers, I'm all ears, and hey, if you're a graphic designer, I'd happily pay for another fun merch design. I'm at Matt@ExtraPointsmb.com.
