Three thoughts on Jackson State's HUGE National Signing Day

I have to be honest, I almost forgot yesterday was the start of National Signing Day. Back when I worked at SB Nation, NSD was the single biggest event in the college football calendar, bigger than the national championship game. But now that there are two signing periods, plus a liberalized transfer market, the significance of the date itself has died down a bit.

I didn't feel bad about publishing a newsletter yesterday about company business and college volleyball.

But of course, it wasn't a sleepy National Signing Day. In fact, it was probably the most newsworthy in modern college football history.

In case you missed it, Deion Sanders and Jackson State shocked everybody by flipping Travis Hunter from Florida State.

It's rare for any FCS school to sign a high three-star prospect directly out of high school, let alone a four-star. Last season, Jackson State signed two top-200 recruits. This season...they signed the number one recruit...period.

This is a huge deal. It's the biggest upset in recruiting history. It's a milestone for HBCU sports. It's potentially a cause for actual concern about the NIL space. It's...a lot.

I've been thinking about this almost non-stop for the last day, and I keep coming back to these three things...

Yes, this has the potential to be HUGE for HBCU sports, and not just at Jackson State
