We're hiring a PT assignment editor!
Here are the details:
Good morning, and thanks for spending part of your day with Extra Points.
I’ve been running Extra Points for five years now, and one thing that has become very, very clear is that I can’t do everything. The company has become too big and complicated…which is a good thing!
So we’ve made hires to support our sales and marketing efforts. But I still write (almost) everything that appears in the newsletter. And when we publish guest posts, well, I edit those…which takes almost as much time as it would for me to actually write something.
I need help! So we’re looking to hire another member of the team to help edit (and solicit) freelance stories, help make the newsletters I write a little better, and maybe even contribute a story of their own every once in a while.
Here are the details:
Extra Points, a leading newsletter covering business, policy and off-the-field stories in the college athletics industry, is now seeking an Assignment Editor. This is currently designated as a part-time and remote position, with the potential to scale into something larger.
Here’s what we’d really need this person to do:
Take ownership of the freelance writing process for Extra Points. That will include evaluating potential freelance pitches, proactively soliciting pitches from unique voices and perspectives, and editing freelance stories in preparation for publication. We hope to publish three or four freelance stories on Extra Points each month.
Occasionally edit Extra Points newsletters written by Matt. You’ve read the newsletter, you know that typos and crimes against the Elements of Style slip into the copy sometimes…but we’re also looking for somebody who can look at a draft and suggest additional reporting, improvements or ask questions.
It would be nice, but not required, if this person could also:
Be willing to also write one newsletter a month for Extra Points
Be willing to make editorial suggestions or tweaks across other Extra Points related projects, such as ADS4000, Extra Points Library, etc.
Here’s what we really need, experience-wise, from this person:
Experience editing in a professional setting. It does not have to be specifically about college sports or higher education, but some experience in improving copy that you did not write is a requirement.
While deep subject matter expertise in what Extra Points covers isn’t required, a curiosity and a willingness to learn about it is. If sports business is boring to you, or if your eyes glaze over at the words “Big South Conference,” or “NIL clearinghouse”, this gig probably isn’t for you.
Comfort working in a remote working environment. Matt lives in Chicago, (CST), but we have members of our team all over the country.
An understanding of what Extra Points is and who we’re writing for.
Here are some things we’d like, but don’t necessarily need, from this person:
Experience and subject matter expertise in at least one Extra Points-related beat. If not college sports, then perhaps higher education, business reporting, law, policy, etc.
A college degree
Professional writing experience (as a reporter or communications professional)
Experience in recruiting and finding creative freelance pitches.
What we can offer this person:
A remote working environment with flexible hours. When you log in is not important to us. We have employees all over the United States right now, so chances are, somebody will be around when you are.
Compensation in the $1,500-$3,000/mo range (starting between 10-15ish hours a week), with the potential to ramp up to additional hours.
Professional mentorship in the sports business/newsletter space
Here’s how to apply:
Send a resume (or link to a LinkedIn profile), a clip, and two ideas for potential freelance stories, including the type of person you’d pitch to write it, to Matt @ ExtraPointsMB.com. We don’t need a cover letter.
I’ll start scheduling interviews this week, and we’ll hope to have somebody start sometime after NACDA (early June).
Thanks! Feel free to share this with your friends and in your professional network.
