What makes somebody a great athletic director?

Good morning, and thanks for your continued support of Extra Points. I hope none of you put Iowa in your Final Four.

I know everybody wants to spend the rest of their day watching college basketball, so I'll try to keep this a more breezy email.

Here's what our full Extra Points subscribers got to read this week

I love our free subscribers. But full Extra Points subscribers get a newsletter five days a week, plus access to our Discord server, free stickers, and the satisfaction that they are making our work sustainable. You can become a full subscriber for just eight bucks a month, or $70 for the entire year. That's like, less than thirty cents a newsletter.

On Tuesday, I shared a newsletter explaining what the heck NIL collectives ACTUALLY do, how they differ from one another, and some of the big concerns I have with the direction of the market. I'm going to be writing more about this world in the near future, I'm sure.

Andy dug into the archives to provide even more color and context around early college basketball tournaments, from the NIT to the NAIA, and how those tournaments were covered. If you enjoyed Monday's newsletter, I'm sure you'll love that one.

We also chatted with an expert on women's college basketball to help you understand the major storylines ahead of this year's women's tournament, just in case you haven't been watching the regular season religiously.

We also have another episode of Going For Two

In this episode, Bryan and I dig into some of the biggest stories over the last week that we weren't able to turn into other videos or newsletters. This week, that really centered on the AD hiring cycle, and the finalists for multiple "Best AD" awards. We discuss:

  • What ACTUALLY makes somebody a good athletic director, and how that might be different from what fans, and even many reporters, actually see.

  • How one could make good hires but still not be a very effective AD

  • Who might be the best AD in the country right now

  • Why Penn State's search for a new AD is coming at a critical time, and who some of those candidates might be

  • How you can save 15% on your first order at Homefield Apparel by using promocode EXTRAPOINTS

  • How we realized far too late that we don't have enough green clothes for our children

  • Where we see the NIL collective space going next

  • and much, much more.

Going For Two is the free podcast of Extra Points, which drops every Wednesday and Friday. You can find it via Apple Podcasts, Spotify and wherever else you get your podcasts.

You can find the video version of the podcasts on our Youtube playlist, right here:

I've also been working with my D1.ticker colleagues on some video interviews over at Collegiate Sports Connect. I've already got a few scheduled for next week that I'm excited about, but there are plenty this week, on NIL collectives, new jobs, fundraising, putting together international tours, and more.

I had a chance to chat with the ol' alma mater, Ohio State, about a unique promotion they recently did, asking their fans for ideas on what the new turf at Ohio Stadium should look like. We also talked about the school's plans to celebrate 100 Years At Ohio Stadium. You can find all of our videos over at Collegiate Sports Connect, but you can watch the Ohio State one here:

Thanks for spending time with us this week. We've got a lot of mid-major and NCAA Tournament related content coming your way next week.

We'll see you on the internet!
