Good morning, and thanks for spending part of your day with Extra Points.
A couple quick housekeeping notes I’d like to hit before today’s story. If you haven’t played any of our games recently, I just finished a significant update to Who’s That Football Team?, our college football trivia game. In addition to reworking the “Daily Challenge” mode, I’ve also fixed dozens of bugs, cleaned up the AI to more communicative in “Traditional” mode and added support for new question types, like “historical record against rivals,” “names of FCS and Division II football stadiums,” “former conference affiliations” and much more.
Who’s That Football Team?, NIL Agency Tycoon 95 and Concession Stand Simulator are all free to play. You can check out all four of our games here. We will continue with substantial updates to our other free games over the next week!
Speaking of updates, if you’re an athletic director, coach or operations staffer, you’ll want to bookmark GamePlace, our new, FREE tool in Extra Points Library, which is meant to help schools find out-of-conference opponents in any NCAA sport. You do NOT need to be a paying Extra Points Library subscriber to use it. Check out GamePlace here.
The officially licensed college sports trading card world just got a lot bigger.
Extra Points has learned that Seven Seven Six, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian’s venture capital firm, has acquired ONIT, a leading trading card company in the collegiate sports space. (We’ve previously written about ONIT’s unique offering in the NIL and trading card world.)
Seven Seven Six has aggressively invested in a variety of sports teams and sports-related properties, such as professional women’s soccer clubs like Angel City FC and Chelsea F.C. Women, as well as professional volleyball, golf and track & field. Its portfolio also includes sports video games (GOALS), sports media (The Offseason) and a variety of tech companies that aren’t directly related to sports.
I asked Ohanian, given that he’s known for both his ties to tech and his support for professional sports (especially women’s professional sports), why he’d be interested in a trading card company.
Ohanian told me he’s also an avid collector of sports memorabilia, and his love and professional support for athletics isn’t about professional sports. “I’ve been a major supporter of the University of Virginia,” he told me, and views ONIT as a pathway to continue his passion for supporting athletics in general while combining his personal passions and professional expertise.
