Mailbag: Wait, so why are so many athletes not doing NIL deals?

Good morning, and thanks for your continued support of Extra Points.

I had originally planned on running this a little later in the week, but my travel plans have changed a bit, so I'm going to need to run it today. If you had a question that I didn't get a chance to answer here, I'm sorry, I'll answer it as soon as I can!

You can always hit me up at [email protected], or shoot me a DM at @MattBrownEP.

Reader Justin asks:

I read an ADU article that said ~10-20% of student athletes from Power 5 schools disclosed at least 1 NIL transaction. Why do you think the majority haven’t participated?

I don't know if I was able to find this exact citation on ADU, but the broader point here is still true, I think. Global Sports Matters reported earlier that "Much less than half of all NCAA athletes appear to have made any NIL deal at all."

Whether the number is 10, 20 or 40%, based on the conversations I've had with ADs, coaches and athletes, I can think of a few reasons why not as many athletes have engaged in this world as you might think.
