NEWS: Extra Points to acquire NIL Wire

The Extra Points family just got bigger

Good morning, and thanks for spending part of your day with Extra Points.

Today, the Extra Points family got bigger.

We are pleased to announce that Extra Points is purchasing NIL Wire, a leading newsletter covering developments in the name, image and likeness space.

With the acquisition, the Extra Points family will manage newsletters with more than 75,000 combined subscribers, making it one of the largest audiences of college sports fans and professionals on the internet.

Extra Points will operate NIL Wire as a separate publication, with its own mailing list, publishing schedule and editorial staff. Over the coming weeks, we will rebrand NIL Wire with a new name, website and logo.

We also want to expand NIL Wire’s coverage. This is a crazy time in college athletics, as institutions begin to directly pay athletes. This development is also forcing changes in how athletic departments are funded, the kinds of businesses that get involved in the college sports industry and what everybody does with that money. While we want to cover NIL, we want to really cover money in college sports more broadly.

Extra Points will continue to publish four days a week, with two completely free newsletters and two behind a premium subscription paywall. The plan is for NIL Wire to continue to publish three days a week. For those currently paying for NIL Wire Premium, we’ll pause invoicing during the month of July. All NIL Wire content will be free in July.

To celebrate this announcement, we are offering a SALE on Extra Points premium subscriptions. For this week, you can grab a subscription for 25% off by clicking this link.

We’re in the process of hiring a full-time writer to take over editorial operations for NIL Wire. While we’re going through that process, we’ll use a variety of freelancers, plus some familiar faces, to write for the newsletter.

I will serve as an editor-in-chief of both publications, but the vast majority of my time and focus will remain here on Extra Points. While I’ll still write about NIL and financial stories in college sports, having a dedicated vertical for those stories will free me up to cover other types of stories on Extra Points. Like, I dunno, breaking huge video game news.

I’m very thankful for the leadership of NIL Wire’s founders, Collin, Cole, and Justin. They’ve built something unique and cool in the newsletter world, and we’ll be happy to root for them in their other newsletter projects.

We’ll spend the next few weeks preparing for our rebrand and finalizing the transition to the Extra Points family of publications. I’m very excited that we’ll now be able to offer two newsletters covering business in college athletics, from different perspectives and voices.

This is an important step for our business. It’s important because it will dramatically increase the size and scale of our audience and advertising inventory. It’s important because it allows us to scale without everything being as reliant on me.

And most importantly, it will help us better serve our mission: to educate, inform and entertain our readers, who want to know more about business and policy issues in college sports.

We got better today, and we’ll be even better in the future.
